Question
Which do you prefer: working individually or working as a group?
What does this mean?
What is your natural working style? Are you a team player? Can you work independently? How versatile are you in switching between the two?
Recruiter’s Perspective
This is a tricky question, because most jobs require both. You often work individually at your task, and then convene together with your team for meetings & project collaborations. So I want to hear that you are comfortable with both, and can effortlessly switch between the two. Of course everyone has a preference. However, the key is to emphasize your versatility and you will perform as needed based on the situation.
Structuring a Good Answer
Start off by briefly answering the question, then quickly shift the focus to how you can work in both modes. Acknowledge the fact that a company requires teamwork and individual work. Then provide supporting details from your previous experiences that highlight your versatility.
Sample Responses
Position: Financial Services
I personally prefer to work as a group, because we are able to get multiple thoughts on the table at once. That said, I am completely comfortable with both working styles, and I understand that depending on the project and particular team environment, I will be required to do both. After all, my goal is to ensure the success of the team, and if that means I need to put my head down and crunch numbers, I will do that. Otherwise, I am happy to facilitate group discussions or lead brainstorming sessions to bring everyone together. In the past, when I was working at Pfizer, due to the rotational nature of the position, I changed roles from a data analyst (who was responsible for a specific product category) to a business development representative (who had to work with several cross-functional members to make sure our clients made the most out of our research findings). In the course of that experience, I learned how to identify what the team needed, and changed my style accordingly to help the team succeed.
